Online exChange Days – Day 2

From January 25th to January 27th the Gituru Secondary School (Kenya) and PAB-Gesamtschule (Germany) had their Online-exChange-Days.
We talked about the importance of trees, planted trees in Borgholzhausen, visited a tree nursery in Kinangop and discussed what everybody of us can do to avoid climate change.

Day 2: Tree planting in the Teutoburger Forest and visiting a tree-nursery in Kinangop

On January 26th, the “Kenia-AG” from Werther and the “Projektkurs” from Borgholzhausen have met up with other volunteers to plant some seedlings of Trees in the Teutoburger Forest to do something for the preservation of the forest. Meanwhile this activity, our partners from the Gituru Secondary School had visited the tree nursery in Kinangop in Kenya.

At the Start, the forest rangers explained us the current situation about the health of the forest. Coniferous trees, such as spruce or fit, in the Teutoburger Forest were badly affected by the hot temperatures of the last summers. This weakened the formation of resin and the bark beetle could thus infest the trees better trough the bark for the breeding passages. These conditions led to the death of large areas of the forest. The planting of well-fortified trees, such as deciduous trees, is necessary for the preservation of the forest.

After that, the Forest Rangers explained us how the plant the seeds of every three species right, that everyone will have the opportunity to get enough light and we split into Teams of two. Because of the Winter Season in Germany, the temperatures were kind of low and the Teachers Mrs. Witt and Mr. Wach provided us with hot Tea and a delicious warm Potato soup with venison. Besides the fun we had, we also learned a lot about our local forest. The hole activity lasted about 5 hours out of 900 Seedlings we able to plant about 650.
